Volunteer Opportunities

Environmental Awareness

For PTA events, please use the guidelines below during the planning and execution phases.
Please reach out to the Environmental Awareness Committee with any questions.

Support D39 strategic goals related to Sustainability Practices by implementing environmentally sustainable practices for all PTO/A events.
1.    Use items that can be recycled/ composted or made from sustainable materials*

•       Use reusable items whenever possible
•       Avoid Styrofoam products
•       Plates, cups, bowls, etc should be compostable/recyclable (paper goods should state 100% compostable or 100% paper (with no waxy coating))
•       Use paper and card stock made of recycled content, if possible

2.    Procure environmentally responsible decorations, give-aways and other supplies*

•       Avoid or limit promotional or give-away items (select items that have a purpose and that are not single-use)
•       Minimize decorations and single-use packaging
•       Consider garnishes, centerpieces and decorations that can be donated, recycled, reused    or composted
•       Utilize reusable service items such as cloth napkins, tablecloths and bulk condiments
•       Purchase items that are sourced locally

3.    Provide recycling and composting services for events

•       Provide clear signage to all recycling and composting collection areas
•       Contact your Green Committee chair to answer any questions

* Whole Foods, Fresh Markets. On-line: http://onyxcompany.com (compostable), Costco, Office Depot, Eco-Products, Natural Value, Bridge-Gate, greenpartygoods.com, ecopartytime.com.

Cafeteria Duty

Parents!

Given the current pandemic, the cafeteria will not be operating at this time. Please check back for opportunities to volunteer when the school reopens and normal service resumes. Thank you for your understanding.

WJHS looks for volunteers throughout the year to ensure a smooth operation of the cafeteria.

This is a quick and easy way to be an involved parent at WJHS. Cafeteria volunteer shifts are just 90 minutes! Take advantage of this opportunity to help the school and sneak a peek at your child’s daily life.

Outdoor Classroom 2020/2021

WJHS Outdoor Classroom II
Help Keep the Garden Open for Our Students!

Under normal circumstances, volunteers are needed to oversee the outdoor classroom area. As a result of the current pandemic and no in-person learning, the outdoor classroom is currently closed. We will keep you updated when it reopens and hope you will consider volunteering your time then!

This is a very minor commitment for any parent, but would make a big difference to our student’s enjoyment of our outdoor space. For more information, please email: president@wjhspto.com

Volunteer for just 30 minutes and you will allow students to enjoy the quiet garden during recess to chat, explore or enjoy a bit of gardening. No green thumb required! Weather permitting, the garden is open Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday during Fall and Spring months.

30 Minutes is all it takes….

It’s easy to volunteer in the Outdoor Classroom:

  • Bring your lunch, a book, a friend or small child.
  • No gardening required (but if you enjoy it, you can).
  • Cancelled if it’s raining.

The students usually draw, play board games, chat or do light work in the peaceful setting. They just need someone there to chaperone and let them know what time it is.

They really need you. The garden can’t open for them without a parent there.

Questions? Observations? Inspired ideas? Just drop us an email.

Caring and Sharing Committee

The PTO Caring and Sharing Committee supports families in the WJHS community who are in the midst of medical or other kinds of emergencies. This committee provides assistance with meals, errands, childcare or whatever may be needed by the family. If you would like to be on the committee and receive emails regarding needs in our community, please contact our committee chairs at caringandsharing@wjhspto.com.
